Why did the Star Trek phenomenon occur? Why did the series attract such a large and devoted audience?

Like everyone else, I can only speculate. But some things seem clear.

For one thing, Star Trek offered hope to a generation who had grown up haunted by the specter of nuclear war. A significant portion of its viewers remembered the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when the country was readying for World War III. Kids were being taught to "duck-and-cover" beneath their school desks if they saw an atomic flash. Grim end: of-the-world scenarios were shown in popular books and films, such as Nevil Shute's On the Beach and Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon! At the same time, our paranoia toward Soviet Russia had reached an all-time high-which may explain why space aliens were generally portrayed in films as evil monsters, bent on conquering Earth.

And in the midst of this paranoia and fear came a bright message of hope in the form of Star Trek, which said, "Yes, we will survive the atomic age. We will contact other intelligent life on other planets, and they'll be our friends, not our enemies. Together, we'll work for the common good."

Suddenly, a whole generation who'd grown up with these terrible tensions and fears turned on their television sets to discover Star Trek there, every weekday.

The 1970s were still times of great cultural upheaval as well; this was the era of Vietnam and Watergate, of drug abuse and sexual revolution. Society was undergoing a rapid change; Americans were learning to mistrust their political leaders. And in the midst of those undependable times, there were the Star Trek crew: utterly trustworthy, predictable, incorruptible-people who could be counted on to tell the truth and behave ethically, with dignity and compassion and intelligence.
